A.J. PierzynskiThe St. Louis Cardinals will bolster their depth at catcher by signing veteran A.J. Pierzynski.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported Friday night that Pierzynski already is in Chicago, where the Cardinals will continue their three-game series with the Cubs on Saturday and Sunday.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “multiple sources with knowledge of an imminent deal confirmed that he was set to join the Cardinals.”

St. Louis starting catcher Yadier Molina will miss at least another month following thumb surgery, which created the need for a veteran catcher on the Cardinals’ roster.

Pierzynski became a free agent shortly after the Red Sox designated him for assignment on July 9. He hit .254 with four home runs and 31 RBI in 72 games for Boston.

UPDATE: The Cardinals confirmed the addition of Pierzynski to their active roster Saturday and have designated ex-Red Sox catcher George Kottaras for assignment. Pierzynski will wear No.35 and will be in the Cardinals’ lineup for Saturday’s game against the Cubs.
