Bartolo Colon was seven outs away from perfection Wednesday night before Robinson Cano came to the plate for the Seattle Mariners.
Cano drove a 2-2 fastball to left field for a single in the seventh inning, ending Colon’s bid to become the 24th pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game.

Colon, who signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the New York Mets before the season, had thrown just 84 pitches before Cano’s single. Colon did get the win, though, as he’s now 9-8 with a 4.03 ERA this season.
Johan Santana became the first Mets pitcher to throw a perfect game back in 2012. Safeco Field has hosted two perfect games in 15 years, thrown by Philip Humber and Felix Hernandez.
