BOSTON — Rubby De La Rosa will start Wednesday for the Red Sox against the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park.
Red Sox manager John Farrell announced after Tuesday’s 8-3 loss that De La Rosa will be called up to face Chris Sale in the third game of the teams’ four-game series. The skipper wasn’t ready to announce a corresponding roster move immediately following the game, but pitcher Brandon Workman confirmed soon after that he’s been optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for De La Rosa on the active roster.
Workman suffered the loss Tuesday, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks over seven innings. The right-hander struck out five and threw 106 pitches (70 strikes) in what he considered to be a step in the right direction following a rocky performance last Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs.
It’s possible Workman’s demotion could be short-lived and that he’ll rejoin the Red Sox after the All-Star break. He wasn’t scheduled to pitch again with the major league club before the break, so the decision to send him to Pawtucket for work certainly makes sense.
Workman being sent to Pawtucket also cools the trade rumors surrounding Jake Peavy — at least for the time being.
