Texas Rangers first baseman Carlos Peña was designated for assignment Thursday after only 18 games with the team.
Peña struggled in those games, going 8-for-59 (.136) with 11 strikeouts. With the move the Rangers recalled J.P. Arencibia from Triple-A, adding a fourth catcher to their 25-man roster.
Though Peña lived in the Dominican Republic until he was 12 years old, he has local ties. He graduated from Haverhill High School in Massachusetts, and he attended college at Northeastern, where he led the Huskies to an NCAA tournament. Peña also played in the Cape Cod League.
The 36-year-old first baseman has bounced around from team to team during his career and had a pit stop with the Boston Red Sox in 2006. He only played in 18 games for the Sox also, but he did manage to hit one walk-off home run in that short amount of time.
