Ty Law is the best cornerback in New England Patriots history and played a key role in the team’s three Super Bowl championships from 2001 through 2004.
The veteran defensive back set the standard for current No. 1 corner Darrelle Revis to live up to this season — his first in New England after signing a one-year free-agent contract in the offseason.
Law is confident that Revis will have a successful 2014 campaign with the Patriots.
“I think he’s going to have a lot of fun and he’s going to be out there doing his job,” Law said Monday, per WEEI.com’s Mike Petraglia.
“What they paid him to do is taking out the best guy but you’re probably going to go inside, you’re probably going to do a little bit of blitzing. It’s just going to be a fun overall scheme for Darrelle because normally he goes into a situation where ‘This is who I have.’ You’re there all day.
“I said (to him) you’re going to do a lot more things because you’re not going to know from week to week if you’re playing a 4-3, a 3-4, you’re not going to know. That was the enjoyment as a player, when you come in and you have no idea what the hell is going to happen in the game plan and you’re looking forward to it. Sometimes, you’re going to get disappointed and say, ‘Aw man, why are we playing this?!’
Not since Law has the Patriots defense had an elite corner capable of taking an opponent’s No. 1 receiver — someone like an A.J. Green or Dez Bryant — out of the offense and shutting them down each week.
Before knee surgery forced Revis to miss nearly the entire 2012 season, he was the best defensive player in football in 2009 and 2010. The Jets would never have reached back-to-back AFC Championship games in those seasons without Revis’ stellar performances.
In addition to playing for the first Super Bowl title of his career, Revis also will be motivated to have a tremendous year so he can earn what could be his last enormous contract as a free agent next offseason. As long as Revis is healthy consistently, he should play at the elite level we saw a few years ago.
