Aussie Rules Football is a pretty violent game, and those who play know this comes with the territory.

Even by Aussie Rules standards, though, what happened during a recent match in Sydney between the UNSW/ES Bulldogs and Western Suburbs Magpies was well over the line.

As a Bulldogs player went up for the ball, the television cameras caught Magpies player Marcus Linsen delivering a vicious cheap shot to opponent Alexander Thompson. If you watch closely, the savage punch happens near the bottom of the screen.

Play was immediately stopped as Thompson received medical attention on the field, but a Twitter user on the scene reported that he appeared to be (relatively) OK.

In a statement released after the match, the Australian Football League said that Linsen would appear before a tribunal on Wednesday, where he will likely receive disciplinary action.
