FOXBORO, Mass. — Darrelle Revis isn’t willing to commit for another year with the New England Patriots just yet.
Revis has been excellent in organized team activities, minicamp and the beginning of training camp, so it’s natural that a report came out that the Patriots already were looking to extend the All-Pro cornerback’s contract. Revis said Tuesday after joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles that he’s not focused on the future.
“No. I’m just here. I’m here, I’m focusing on this year,” Revis said at Gillette Stadium. “That has nothing to do with what’s going on right now.”
Revis signed a two-year, $32 million contract with the Patriots this offseason after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s essentially a one-year, $12 million contract, however, with an option for a second year to prevent the Patriots from franchising Revis.
On Tuesday, Revis chose to avoid answering if he wants to be here for the long term.
“I’m here for right now,” Revis said. “I’m in this contract. The only thing I’m focused on is this year.”
Revis looks dominant when he’s putting forth full effort, but there are times when the cornerback appears to trail off on his wide receiver’s routes, allowing easy catches. Revis explained his mentality on those reps.
“You know, I’ve been doing this for awhile,” Revis said. “Sometimes you do that, sometimes you don’t. It just depends on how everything’s going. Like I said, the reps, even though I’m not maybe running that fast, they’re reps and I know what I need to do for that play.”
Revis sat out the Patriots’ preseason opener Thursday night against the Washington Redskins. He could see his Patriots debut Friday night at Gillette against the Eagles.
