The Boston Red Sox’s 2014 season has been so frustrating that one call during Saturday’s game was enough to break David Ross’ streak of 13 seasons without being ejected.
Boston blew an early three-run lead and found themselves down 7-3 in the eighth inning. Ross came to the plate after a Mookie Betts double and tried to keep the potential rally going.
The veteran catcher thought he laid off a 3-2 pitch for a walk, but first base umpire Vic Carapazza called Ross out on a check swing. Ross was furious with the call and argued the strikeout, which led to his ejection.
“I felt like he didn’t go around. I thought he held up his swing, as did David himself,” manager John Farrell said. “So, on a questionable call, he started arguing. There’s still a lot of fight in this group. Certainly, there’s a lot of frustration in the stretch that we’re in right now, but it doesn’t take away from the competitiveness with which we’re going about it.”
The rest of the Red Sox couldn’t muster anything either, and Seattle defeated Boston for the second consecutive day.
