“A year ago, I was playing NFL football,” Shaw said in the video. “I’ve recently been diagnosed with ALS. I’m here today to stand up and fight with all of you against this disease.”

Shaw, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers out of Penn State, then completed the chilly challenge that has gone viral of lateĀ to raise awareness and funds for the disease.

After spending one season with the Panthers, Shaw played for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2008) and Chicago Bears (2009). He most recently played for the Tennessee Titans (2010-12) where he was the special teams captain in 2011 and 2012 before announcing his retirement earlier this year.

The challenge, which was inspired by former Boston College baseball captain Pete Frates, has led to a massive surge in donations to the ALS Association. According to the Los AngelesĀ Ā Times, the organization reported Wednesday that they raised an amazing $8.6 million overnight.
