BOSTON — The Red Sox honored fallen Maj. Gen. Harold Greene during Saturday’s game against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park.
Greene, the highest-ranking U.S. military officer killed in combat since the Vietnam War, was honored with a special tribute following the fifth inning. His family, donning Red Sox jerseys, stood on top of Boston’s dugout as his picture was shown on the center field scoreboard. The Fenway Faithful and players joined in paying their respects, with the crowd eventually erupting into a “USA!” chant.
Greene, a Boston native and passionate Red Sox fan, was killed Aug. 5 when a gunman believed to be an Afghan soldier opened fire at a military academy near Kabul. He was buried with full honors Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery.
Maj. Gen. Greene’s wife, retired Army Col. Susan Myers, daughter Amelia Greene, and son Army First Lt. Matthew Greene and his wife Kasandra attended Saturday’s game.
