NFL: Preseason-Atlanta Falcons at Houston TexansThe New England Patriots reportedly took a closer look at 12 free agents Saturday while cutting their roster from 75 to 53 players.

The Patriots worked out quarterbacks Jeff Mathews and McLeod Bethel-Thompson, wide receivers Armon Binns and Rashad Lawrence, safety Omar Brown, cornerbacks Deveron Carr and Aaron Hester, defensive tackles Jermelle Cudjo and Hebron Fangupo, defensive end Cam Henderson, linebacker Kevin Reddick and running back Jerome Smith.

Mathews went undrafted out of Cornell before signing as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons. He was featured being cut on this week’s episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”

The Patriots were left shallow at linebacker after cutting Taylor McCuller, Steve Beauharnais and Ja’Gared Davis on Saturday. The 6-foot-1, 246-pound Reddick was waived earlier in the week by the New Orleans Saints. He played in all 16 games last season, recording 12 tackles as a special-teamer.
