Tony StewartIn the wake of a tragic incident during a race in upstate New York Saturday night, Tony Stewart plans to race in the Cheez-It 355 Sprint Cup event at Watkins Glen on Sunday.

“We’re business as usual today,” Stewart-Haas Racing competition director Greg Zipadelli told USA TODAY Sports.

Just a few hours prior to Zipadelli’s announcement, Stewart’s vehicle collided violently with 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr., who had gotten out of his car to confront Stewart during a race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. Ward was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead Saturday night.

According to Ontario County (N.Y.) sheriff Philip C. Povero, an investigation into Ward’s death and Stewart’s involvement is “ongoing.”

Stewart is slated to start in the 13th position in Sunday’s Sprint Cup race, which will begin at 1 p.m. ET.
