Max Steinberg, a 24-year-old Southern Californian who joined the Israel Defense Forces, died two weeks ago in a battle in Gaza.

In the news coverage of Steinberg’s death, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft saw a photo of the soldier wearing a Patriots hat and felt the need to reach out to his family. Kraft sent Steinberg’s parents a letter — which TMZ reported was first published by the Jewish Journal.

“(Max) represents the consummate patriot, and I am forever grateful for the sacrifices he made to keep our beloved Israel safe,” Kraft wrote.
