After losing two small forwards in the past two weeks, USA Basketball announced Friday afternoon that the team was adding Sacramento Kings star Rudy Gay to its roster.
Paul George suffered a horrific injury on Saturday that will likely keep him out for the whole 2014-15 season, and Kevin Durant withdrew from the roster Thursday afternoon, leaving Team USA fairly thin at the position.
Chandler Parsons, Gordon Hayward, Kyle Korver and DeMar DeRozan will compete for a chance to represent their country in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup Aug. 14-16. USA coach Mike Krzyzewski will be forced to cut the roster to 12 men before the team leaves for Spain.
Gay averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season. He played 18 games with the Toronto Raptors before being traded to the Sacramento Kings, where he played his final 55 games.
At 27-years-old, Gay has never made an NBA All-Star team.
