The San Antonio Spurs made a potentially landscape-altering coaching decision Tuesday.
The Spurs announced they have hired Becky Hammon, who will become the second female assistant coach in NBA history. Lisa Boyer served on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ coaching staff during the 2001-02 season.
“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said in a statement released by the team. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”
Hammon is a 16-year WNBA veteran — the last eight with the San Antonio Stars — who announced in July that she’d be retiring following this season. She was named one of the WNBA’s top 15 players of all time in 2011 and ranks among the league’s all-time leaders in points, assists and games played.
