Nicklas Backstrom received his silver medal from the 2014 Winter Olympic ice hockey tournament in the most anti-climactic way Thursday.

At a ceremony in Sweden, the 26-year-old was given his medal six months after the Sochi Games concluded.

In a story first reported by Yahoo! Sports, the Washington Capitals center was banned from the gold medal game against Canada after he violated the International Olympic Committee’s anti-doping rules.

The IOC later cleared Backstrom, allowing him to receive his medal, but that doesn’t change the fact that he missed an opportunity of a lifetime.

Without Backstrom — one of Sweden’s most skilled forwards — Canada cruised to a 3-0 victory for its second straight Olympic title.
