The rivalry between Philadelphia and New York rings true even for 12-year-olds.
Kai Williams played for the Taney baseball team that represented the Mid-Atlantic region in this year’s 2014 Little League World Series. Williams, like most kids in South Philadelphia, roots for the Phillies. If he were to be drafted by the rival Mets one day, he told the Philadelphia Daily News he wouldn’t go.
His mother begged to differ.
“Oh, yes, you will,” she said.
At the moment, Williams and the rest of the Taney team are not playing anywhere, as they were eliminated from the tournament by the Great Lakes team from Chicago. Still, Taney played valiantly and hard until the final out, capturing the imaginations of the region and the country.
Taney dominated the headlines over the past week and a half thanks to Mo’Ne Davis’ stellar pitching and cool demeanor. Being in the limelight was fun for the team, but one parent said it will be good for the players to go back to their normal lives.
“I’ve been going back and forth, and when you come here (to Williamsport) you do feel like it’s this little bubble of pressure, so I think being in his own bed and seeing his dog will be good,” Jerry Davis, father of Carter Davis, told the Daily News. “And when he starts playing baseball in the fall, nobody will be asking him how he is or what he had for breakfast.”
