Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart will return to racing Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, his team announced.
It will be Stewart’s first competition since he was involved in an Aug. 9 on-track collision that killed fellow driver Kevin Ward Jr. at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in upstate New York. Stewart skipped three consecutive races after the fatal crash.
“Tony Stewart has received all the necessary clearances required to return to all racing activities and therefore is eligible to compete this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway,” Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer, said in a statement Thursday. “NASCAR has remained in constant contact with his race team and we will stay very close to this situation as Stewart returns to competition.”
The Ontario County (N.Y.) sheriff’s department’s investigation into the crash is ongoing.
