The Boston Bruins released veteran forward Ville Leino from his tryout contract on Monday, general manager Peter Chiarelli announced.
The team also released defenseman Chris Breen from Bruins training camp. He will report to the Providence Bruins’ training camp.
The moves come on the same day the B’s signed restricted free agents Torey Krug and Reilly Smith to matching one-year, $1.4 million contracts, leaving little room for Leino with the club, and also a slim chance he finds a home on another NHL team this season.
The 30-year-old Finnish winger was invited to Bruins training camp on a tryout basis earlier this month after his contract with the Buffalo Sabres was bought out in June. Leino, who also spent time with the Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers recorded 19 goals and 34 assists during the 2010-11 season, but he’s struggled to replicate those numbers.
Last season with Buffalo, Leino appeared in just 58 games with the Sabres and was held scoreless while racking up 15 assists.
