Arrowhead Stadium will be rocking Monday night, and the Kansas City Chiefs are hoping to take it to world-record levels.
Already known for having one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL, the Chiefs are looking to set a Guinness World Record for the loudest outdoor sports stadium when they host the New England Patriots on “Monday Night Football.”
Arrowhead Stadium used to hold the record, but that was broken last season by the Seattle Seahawks at CenturyLink Field.
“I will witness three attempts at measuring a peak crowd noise,” Guinness adjudicator Philip Robertson said, according to the Chiefs’ website. “Last year, I noticed the fans were passionate and had a desire to see their team succeed. It was great to see that intense love from the fans. The current record for the loudest crowd roar is 137.6 decibels, so if the same level of intensity is there this year, then there’s a chance they can break it.”
The Chiefs also hope the crowd noise will give them an advantage against the Patriots’ offense. The Patriots are ready to embrace that challenge.
“I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s doable,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick told reporters Tuesday. “But there are plenty of times when it would be really hard, when the crowd really gets going or you’re backed up on your own (1-yard line) or you’re going in for a touchdown and in the red area and it’s just — so, I think you have to be aware of those situations, be aware of game situations.
“(Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels) is a very experienced play-caller and coordinator. He can hear it, he can feel it, and I don’t think it’s the type of call (where) we could run one of two or three plays depending on the look and the crowd is in that kind of frenzy, I don’t think that’s really when you want to make that call.
“Obviously, third down is a challenging down in Kansas City with their defense and the multiple looks they give you on the front and pressure. So, to identify those, that’s – but third down is challenging on the road everywhere. It might be a little louder there, probably is, but it’s all, I don’t want to say the same, but pretty much you’re dealing with the same thing in every away game in that situation.”
