David Ortiz made Fangraphs’ list of the most extreme home runs of the 2014 Major League Baseball season, but it’s not for a feat you’d expect.
The Boston Red Sox slugger actually hit the shortest home run of the year with a 318-foot shot against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. And although it’s a bit surprising considering Big Papi is usually in the business of hitting long balls, it actually makes sense given that he hit it to the right field corner.
The distance from home plate to Pesky’s Pole measures just 302 feet, the shortest in all of baseball.
Fangraphs put together some other interesting home runs, including the highest and lowest homers, the most outside and inside homer pitches (for right- and left-handed hitters) and many more.
But the best one might have been their “zaniest inside-the-park homer,” courtesy of the Kansas City Royals’ Lorenzo Cain and the Detroit Tigers’ outfield.
