Donte Stallworth has never refrained from speaking his mind.
Now, he’ll have a national platform to do so.
The former NFL receiver, who last saw the playing field with the New England Patriots in 2012, has been hired by the Huffington Post as a fellow to cover national security, the online publication announced Wednesday night.
“Donte has a quick mind, an insatiable curiosity and a passion for politics — the necessary qualities of a great journalist,” Ryan Grim, the Huffington Post’s Washington bureau chief, said in a statement.
The 33-year-old Stallworth has become known for his active Twitter account, which he has used to speak his mind about a wide range of issues, from swine flu vaccine conspiracies to the impact of Michael Sam on the NFL.
His stance on the latter issue could have helped win him the job, as Grim said that Stallworth’s “LGBT work brought him to our attention and impressed us.” The receiver has been particularly critical of those in NFL circles who claim that having an openly gay player such as Sam on their team would be a “distraction.”
Stallworth spent two separate stints in New England in 2007 and 2012, compiling 697 receiving yards and three touchdowns during the team’s 16-0 regular season in 2007.
