Fantasy Football: Jake Locker Among Week 2 Waiver Wire Pickups To Consider

Jake LockerCalvin Johnson was the highest-scoring wide receiver in standard scoring fantasy football leagues in Week 1. No surprise there.

Any guesses on who was No. 2?

That’d be none other than Allen Hurns, an undrafted rookie on the Jacksonville Jaguars who roasted the Philadelphia Eagles for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

So is Hurns destined for 15 more games of fantasy greatness? Probably not. Week 2 is all about finding a delicate balance between players who could be this year’s breakout star and those who were just Week 1 flashes in the pan.

Luckily for you, there’s still plenty of talent on the waiver wire that can help you in Week 2 and beyond. Starting with quarterback, we’ll provide an in-depth analysis on our top pickup for each position, as well as a list of five other players at that position who could help your team.

Quarterback: Jake Locker, Tennessee Titans
The Titans surprised many by hanging 26 points on the Kansas City Chiefs en route to a Week 1 win, and Locker was a big reason why. The 26-year-old got rolling after Tennessee went with a no-huddle offense, putting up 266 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Next on the schedule are the Dallas Cowboys, who got shredded for 28 points in the first half last week by the San Francisco 49ers. If your starting QB faces a tough matchup, it might be worth starting Locker.

Other quarterbacks to watch: Ryan Tannehill, Ben Roethlisberger, Josh McCown, Alex Smith, Derek Carr

Running Back: Justin Forsett, Baltimore Ravens
With Ray Rice out of the picture, that leaves Forsett and Bernard Pierce to battle it out for the lead role in the Ravens’ backfield. Based on Week 1, it could be Forsett’s job to lose. The seventh-year back rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Pierce had just 14 yards and coughed up a fumble. Forsett won’t be a long-term solution for Baltimore, but he’s worth a spot start against a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that gave up 100 yards to Terrance West last week.

Other running backs to watch: Knowshon Moreno, Chris Ivory, Mark Ingram, Terrance West, Bobby Rainey

Wide Receiver: Greg Jennings, Minnesota Vikings
Cordarrelle Patterson may have gotten all the headlines in Week 1, but Jennings led the way Sunday with a team-high six receptions for 58 yards and a score. Matt Cassel clearly trusts Jennings as his No. 1 target, which makes the fact that he’s owned in less than 40 percent of Yahoo! standard leagues a bit surprising. The New England Patriots aren’t the best matchup, but they proved last weekend that they can be beaten. Grab Jennings while you can.

Other receivers to watch: Kelvin Benjamin, Markus Wheaton, Steve Smith Sr., Rod Streater, Allen Hurns

Tight End: Dwayne Allen, Indianapolis Colts
We had Allen on our list of potential breakout players in 2014, and for good reason. After his only catch in 2013 went for a touchdown before a season-ending injury, Allen returned to the field Sunday night and hauled in a 41-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. While Allen splits time with Coby Fleener, he’s clearly Andrew Luck’s preferred red zone target and could play an increased role as the season progresses. If you need a new starter, take a chance on Allen.

Other tight ends to watch: Antonio Gates, Heath Miller, Delanie Walker, Travis Kelce, Tim Wright
