Francesco Totti added to his own international soccer legend Tuesday when he became the oldest goal scorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League.
Totti, 38, scored in the first half of AS Roma’s 1-1 draw against Manchester City. The goal was the Italian forward’s first of the 2014-15 season (in any competition).
Visiting Roma was trailing 1-0 in the 23rd minute when Totti etched his name into the history books. Radja Nainggolan’s first-time pass sent Totti in behind the defense. The ageless forward did the rest, running onto the ball and beating goalkeeper Joe Hart with a delicate chip.
Totti passed Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs as the oldest goal scorer in European soccer’s elite club competition. Former AC Milan striker (and current manager of the Italian club) Filippo Inzaghi is the Champions League’s third-oldest goal scorer.

In addition to its historical significance, Totti’s goal validated some world-class banter in which the two clubs engaged earlier Tuesday.

Totti deservedly received a rousing ovation from both sets of fans at the Etihad Stadium when he was substituted in the 72nd minute.
