Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce isn’t buying the NFL’s story regarding the Ray Rice video.
On Thursday, teammate Cary Williams criticized the league for its handling of the situation, as he questioned why TMZ was able to get its hands on the footage of Rice striking his wife in an elevator, but Roger Goodell could not. The next day, Kelce took Williams’ criticism one step further, blasting the NFL for “lying and misleading people” about the entire ordeal.
“If they would have just came out and said, ‘You know what we had a wrong — we made a wrong decision,'” Kelce told the 94WIP Morning Show on Friday, per Pro Football Talk. “‘We should have suspended him for longer. This is something that we mishandled,’” Kelce told 94 WIP, “I would have had a lot more respect for the NFL than what they’re doing now, which seems like they are just backtracking and trying to save face in front of the fans and it’s clear as day, I think to me, they’re lying and misleading people.”
While Kelce is unhappy about the league’s inability to admit they made a mistake by initially handing down a measly two-game suspension to the former Baltimore Ravens running back, he’s also very skeptical that they didn’t see the video.
“They (the NFL) haven’t given like a concrete explanation as to what they’re doing,” Kelce said. “I mean, the whole thing has been just really mishandled. And then, now all the sudden with tape coming out? I’m sorry, but I can’t believe that an organization with billions of dollars and this tape is running out there through law enforcement and through media outlets that they somehow couldn’t get their hands on the tape. …They made a mistake by only suspending (Rice) for two games.”
