After finishing on top in 2013, the Boston Red Sox became the cellar dwellers of the American League East less than a year later.
“To think that 11 months ago we were world champions, that seems farther than it is,” John Farrell said Monday as the team cleaned out its clubhouse. “My view on it is that the wide swing, the drastic change, has not only been a surprise to what we’ve anticipated, but seemingly the World Series was longer ago than just one year.”
Ben Cherington and the Red Sox front office want to be active during the offseason and make sure the Boston begins 2015 with a team that can sustain success annually.
“We’d like to add some things this winter, and I do think we have the start of the group,” Cherington said. “I’m not sure we’re that far away, but we’re not there yet.”
