Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said Tuesday on MLB Network Radio that the 27-year-old Cuban-born outfielder “likely” will make his major league debut Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. According to Farrell, Castillo will play center field.
The Red Sox signed Castillo to a seven-year, $72.5 million contract in late August, then sent him to three teams in their minor league system to get his feet wet. Castillo currently is with Triple-A Pawtucket, which will play its season finale Tuesday night in the Triple-A National Championship Game.
Castillo entered Tuesday hitting .297 (11-for-37) with four RBIs in 10 minor league games. He also had walked five times and stolen two bases.
