Jordan Henderson becomes more important to Liverpool with each passing day, so his latest honor comes as no surprise.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers picked Henderson to be Liverpool’s vice-captain Tuesday. The 24-year-old midfielder will joins captain Steven Gerrard among the club’s recognized dressing-room leaders.
“Jordan is someone who represents the best values of what we are all about, as a team and as a club,” Rodgers said, according to LiverpoolFC.com. “Both he and Steven are examples to others in how they conduct themselves on and off the pitch. It’s how they live their lives, it’s how they train and it’s how they approach their work.
“Jordan is completely dedicated to the game and his leadership qualities come from the example he sets. It’s another great story for Jordan in his journey as a Liverpool player and it shows the great progress he has made.
“For club and country he holds himself really well, he’s got great stature and I believe he will be an important player here for years to come.”
Henderson has played 136 games and scored 13 goals in his three-plus seasons as a Liverpool player.
Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland in the summer of 2011 in a £20 million ($32.5 million) transfer. Henderson was heavily criticized in his first season at Anfield, and Rodgers even tried to sell him to Fulham in summer 2012, according to the Telegraph. But Henderson kept working, improved his game and silenced doubters over the next two years.
Henderson was a central figure in last season’s Premier League title challenge, starting the first 34 games until he was suspended for next three. He has played every minute of Liverpool’s four league games in 2014-15.
Henderson replaces Daniel Agger, who departed for Danish club Brondby in August, as Liverpool’s vice-captain.
