To say New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom came out firing in his start against the Miami Marlins Monday night would be an understatement.
The righty mowed down the first eight hitters in the Marlins’ order to tie an MLB record for most consecutive strikeouts to start a game.
The man who prevented deGrom from breaking the record, ironically enough, was a pitcher. Jarred Cosart singled off deGrom to end his string of strikeouts, but the damage was done.

DeGrom’s feat hadn’t been accomplished since 1986, when Houston Astros pitcher Jim Deshaies punched out the first eight batters he saw against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
DeGrom left the game after seven innings after allowing only three earned runs to go along with 13 strikeouts. The Mets, as they’re wont to do, still lost 6-5.
On the season, deGrom has been a pleasant surprise for the struggling Mets and has established himself as a Rookie of the Year candidate, owning an 8-6 record with a 2.62 ERA through Monday.
