BOSTON — Brock Holt has appeared in each of the Red Sox’s last 99 games, but that streak might come to an end Saturday night.
Holt exited Friday night’s win over the Toronto Blue Jays with dizziness manager John Farrell said was brought on by an illness. With those symptoms still lingering, Holt has been held out of the lineup for Saturday’s rematch, though Farrell said he will be available off the bench.
Mookie Betts will get the start in center field and assume Holt’s usual spot atop the batting order. Betts has seen just five at-bats from the leadoff slot this season, going 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
The rookie has really turned it on at the plate of late, notching multiple hits in four of his last six games. He came through with two base hits Friday to go along with a career-high three runs scored.
Elsewhere in the lineup, Will Middlebrooks (third base) and Allen Craig (right field) both return after starting Friday’s game on the bench. Both eventually entered, with Middlebrooks enjoying better fortune than Craig. The former went 1-for-1 with an RBI, while the latter went 0-for-2 and had a mental lapse in right field that nearly cost the Red Sox the game.
