redskins logoAdd one more name to the list of media members who won’t use the Washington football team’s nickname.

Actually, make that an entire publication.

The New York Daily News announced Wednesday that it will henceforth refrain from publishing the Redskins’ name or logo both in print and online.

“Enormously popular and deeply ingrained in sporting culture, the Redskins name is a throwback to a vanished era of perniciously casual racial attitudes,” a statement from the newspaper read. “No new franchise would consider adopting a name based on pigmentation — Whiteskins, Blackskins, Yellowskins or Redskins — today. The time has come to leave the word behind.”

The Daily News will use a new, simplistic logo (pictured above) in place of the Redskins’ usual Native American imagery and will publish the team’s nickname only in certain instances.

“The News will publish the term Redskin in reader letters about the controversy and in quotations in stories about the controversy when a full quotation seems particularly relevant,” the statement continued. “Otherwise, the name will not appear in the newspaper.”

As a paper covering the New York Giants — one of Washington’s primary rivals — expect these new rules to come into play quite a bit this season.
