Major League Baseball announced Friday that Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has been suspended 25 games after testing positive for an amphetamine.

Davis apologized to the Orioles organization and said the positive test was the result of him taking Adderall, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

Davis, who finished third in American League MVP voting last season, has seen his stats plummet in 2014. He’s batting just .196 through 127 games — down a full 90 points from his final mark last season — with 26 home runs and 72 RBIs. His suspension will cover the final 17 games of Baltimore’s regular season and the first eight games of the playoffs, should the Orioles advance that far.

The O’s hold a commanding lead atop the AL East standings, leading the Toronto Blue Jays by 10 games entering Friday.

Davis led all major league hitters in home runs (53) and RBIs (138) last season while ranking second in OPS (1.004) and seventh in WAR (6.4).
