The Flyers led the league in penalty minutes last season and it looks like they aren’t ready to give that record up quite yet. There were five fights in the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals game Monday night. Yes, you read that right. Five.

The first one broke out just a little more than two minutes after the start of the game when Derek Mathers plowed Liam O’Brien over.

In the last minute of the first period, Caps winger Garrett Mitchell hit Brayden Schenn hard into the boards, knocking him to the ground. Schenn was not pleased, and let Mitchell know by retaliating with his fists.

Flyers center Blair Jones had a busy night, he dropped the gloves twice and registered two points. First he took on Kris Newbury and then later he traded punches with Steve Olesky

The last fight of the game came at 10:39 in the third period when Philadelphia’s Chris VandeVelde and Washington’s Chris Brown’s puck battle evolved into a brawl behind the Flyers’ net.

But wait, there’s more. In the Flyers game versus the Toronto Maple Leafs in Ontario, there were two fights. Zack Tortini traded blows with Toronto’s Frazer McLaren halfway through the first period and Wayne Simmonds had a short bout with Korbinian Holzer with five minutes to go in the third.

In the end, the Flyers beat the Capitals 5-4 and took a 3-2 loss to the Maple Leafs in a shoot out.
