Five games remain on the Boston Red Sox’s 2014 schedule. That means each remaining starter is set to make his final start of the season.
It will be Anthony Ranaudo’s turn Wednesday. He’ll be on the bump against the Tampa Bay Rays in the second of three games between the underachieving American League East foes at Fenway Park.
Ranaudo has hit a rough patch, dropping his last three starts since winning his first three major league outings. The right-hander allowed three earned runs on four hits, including two homers, over 5 2/3 innings in his last start Sept. 16 against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.
Ranaudo enters Wednesday’s game with a 5.29 ERA. The 25-year-old is auditioning for a big league role in 2015, but the results haven’t really been there to this point. Ranaudo certainly would love to finish the season strong.
The Rays will counter with Jake Odorizzi, who has struggled away from Tropicana Field. Odorizzi owns a 2.62 ERA in 17 home starts compared to a 6.06 ERA in 13 road starts. The Red Sox are hoping that trend continues.
