The New York Yankees ran right into two outs Wednesday night against the Boston Red Sox.
The Red Sox turned an extremely unconventional double play in the first inning of the teams’ middle game at Yankee Stadium. It was the product of some awful baserunning by the Yankees, though the Red Sox also deserve credit for their collective awareness amid a whole bunch of moving parts.
Derek Jeter and Brett Gardner reached with one out in the bottom of the first. The Yankees attempted a double-steal, at which point mayhem ensued. The end result was a 2-6-3-4-5-3 double play that you really need to see to believe.
Five different players touched the baseball on the double play. It ended with first baseman Allen Craig applying a tag at second base.
