BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will undergo a procedure on his left hand/wrist Thursday in Boston, according to manager John Farrell.
Farrell confirmed after Wednesday’s 10-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park that Boston hand specialist Dr. Matthew Leibman will perform the procedure on Pedroia, who is expected to miss the remainder of the 2014 season.
“I don’t have any more specifics than that, but there will be certainly a follow-up after that’s completed (Thursday),” Farrell said.
Pedroia underwent an MRI on Tuesday that revealed worsening inflammation in his left hand/wrist. The four-time All-Star said Tuesday he has played through the injury for most of the season, but it clearly has gotten to a point where the Red Sox would prefer to see him undergo surgery in order to be fully healthy for 2015.
Pedroia underwent thumb surgery last offseason following the Red Sox’s World Series run. The 31-year-old still was recovering from that procedure when he fell awkwardly on his left hand/wrist during the Red Sox’s home opener April 4. It’s been a battle ever since.
Pedroia posted career-low offensive numbers this season, hitting .278 with seven homers, 53 RBIs and a .712 OPS in 135 games.
