Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is one of the most dominant defensive players in the NFL, and his contract is about to reflect that fact.
ESPN.com reports Watt and the Texans have come to terms on a six-year contract extension that could be worth as much as $100 million. The new contract will keep him with the Texans through the 2021 season and reportedly will pay Watt $51.8 million guaranteed. That would be the most for a defensive player.
The $16.6 million annual salary would also be an NFL record for a defensive player.
Watt certainly has earned the big payday after just three seasons in the NFL. The Wisconsin alum was named the 2012 NFL Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 20.5 sacks. He was named a Pro Bowler after collecting 10.5 sacks in 2013 and has 36.5 sacks in his first three seasons as a pro.
