nationals parkWe have known the matchup and host city of the 2015 Winter Classic for some time, and now we might finally have learned the actual venue of the NHL’s annual outdoor spectacle.

The Washington Post reported Saturday, citing sources, that Nationals Park — home of Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals — will host the outdoor matchup between the Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Capitals.

The report also said a formal announcement should come “very soon.”

The last Winter Classic to be played in a baseball stadium was the 2012 contest between the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers at Citizens Bank Park.

The 2015 Winter Classic — scheduled for New Year’s Day — will be the second time the Capitals have participated in the event. They defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 at Heinz Field in 2011.

The other outdoor game on the 2014-15 NHL schedule will be played at Levi’s Stadium (home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers) between the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.
