While the majority of the fanfare has been reserved for Derek Jeter’s retirement this year, he isn’t the only standout player hanging up the cleats.
Chicago White Sox slugger Paul Konerko, who has spent 16 of his 18 seasons in the majors on the South Side, is also calling it a career. Konerko has been a fixture for the Sox since 1999, and throughout the past decade and a half, he has come to mean just as much to Chicago fans as Jeter means to Yankee supporters.
The feelings are clearly mutual, and as a thank you to the fans, Konerko decided to thank them all for the memories in a video that the White Sox released Thursday. Instead of expressing his gratitude in the traditional newspaper route, the 38-year-old said he wanted to do something a little different. According to David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune, the video was Konerko’s idea, and all of the highlights were handpicked by him while all of the words he spoke were written by him, as well.
