The New England Patriots have played just four games, so it’s way too early to say their season is doomed.
Still, the team’s play so far certainly hasn’t inspired confidence. New England fell to 2-2 Monday night after a blowout 41-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, their second-worst defeat since Bill Belichick took over in 2000.
Rodney Harrison appeared on WEEI’s “Middays with MFB” radio program on Tuesday, and the former Patriots safety didn’t hold back in criticizing his former team.
“I’m not used to seeing a team go out that was so unprepared, a team that was flat-out embarrassed,” Harrison said, via WEEI. “You expect your best players to step up and be able to make plays, and you put on that tape and you just see quarterbacks not afraid to go at (Darrelle) Revis, Vince Wilfork, he missed a tackle that could have stopped that touchdown, (Jerod) Mayo gets burned on a touchdown (and Tom) Brady just looks like he’s scared to death back there.”
Brady had one of the worst games of his career on Monday, completing just 14 of 23 passes for 159 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions before getting benched for Jimmy Garoppolo in the fourth quarter.
“When you feel confident and you’re feeling good about yourself on the field, everything slows down,” Harrison added. “It’s not slowing down for Tom. For years we’ve been so spoiled with Tom and his confidence and the arrogance with which great quarterbacks play. And he just doesn’t have that same swag.”
New England’s problems don’t start and end with its quarterback, though, and Harrison admitted that Brady isn’t exactly surrounded with potent offensive weapons. Whatever issues the Patriots have, they’ll need to solve them fast, as they take on an undefeated Cincinnati Bengals squad on Sunday Night Football in Week 5.
