Jordan Hart and Oscar Johnson have been arrested in connection with the overdose death of former New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard.
Hart, the son of New York Islanders’ legend Gerry Hart, was arrested for supplying Boogaard with prescription painkillers, according to My Fox NY, citing an indictment.
Hart reportedly began selling pills to Boogaard in November 2010. About two weeks after Boogaard’s final purchase, the former Ranger died of an overdose of oxycodone and alcohol in his brother’s Minneapolis apartment.
The indictment also states that many of the prescriptions were written by Johnson, a physician’s assistant, and mailed from Utah.
Boogaard became addicted to prescription painkillers between 2005 and 2010 while playing for the Minnesota Wild.
In December of the 2010-11 season, Boogaard suffered a concussion during an on-ice fight and recovered in his Manhattan apartment. The indictment says that during this time, Boogaard ingested a considerable amount of Percocet and Ambien. The Ambien was prescribed by the Rangers while the Percocet was sold to Boogaard by Hart.
When Boogaard attempted to return in the spring, he was admitted into a substance abuse center in California. Later that month, he was allowed to return home to pick up his belongings. During that time he made one final purchase from Hart.
According to indictment, Boogaard left the pills with his brother when he returned to the clinic. In May, he was allowed to leave the clinic again for a family event, during which he asked his brother for a pill he had left with him. He took the pill prior to a night of heavy drinking. Following his death, Boogaard’s brother was charged with giving him the Oxycodone.
Hart and Johnson were indicted in the Untied States District Court in Manhattan.
