The White House is vocally putting the hammer down against the NFL once again.
Almost two weeks after White House press secretary John Earnest said in a statement that “hitting a woman is not something a real man does,” a senior administration official came down hard against the NFL during a briefing Thursday.
“Many of these professional athletes are marketed as role models to young people and so their behavior does have the potential to influence these young people, and it’s one of the many reasons it’s important that the league get a handle on this and have a zero tolerance (policy),” the official told reporters, via CBS News.
The statement follows recent controversies surrounding such NFL stars as Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Greg Hardy and, most recently, Jonathan Dwyer, as well as the league’s questionable judgment in terms of handling the situations.
The White House made the statement while introducing a new public awareness campaign called “It’s On Us,” which aims to fight against sexual assaults on college campuses. The public service announcements feature Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love, “Scandal” star Kerry Washington and others.
