The sky could steal some attention from the action on the field during Sunday and Monday’s NFL games.
Women’s advocacy group UltraViolet plans to fly planes over four NFL stadiums with banners that read, “@UltraViolet: #GoodellMustGo.”
The planes are scheduled to fly for two hours above the stadiums prior to the no-fly security restrictions that begin one hour before game time, per Bloomberg.
Sundays planes will fly over MetLife Stadium before the New York Giants’ game against the Arizona Cardinals, as well as over FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland and Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis will receive a visit Monday.
UltraViolet’s co-founder, Nita Chaudhary, made it clear that the Ray Rice situation is not the lone reason behind this protest.
“It is also clear given the league’s failure to take action in the domestic violence cases of Carolina Panthers player Greg Hardy — found guilty of assault in a court of law in July — and San Francisco 49ers player Ray McDonald,” Chaudhary said via The Big Lead.
With this protest, UltraViolet is certainly making a strong statement about the NFL’s mishandling of domestic abuse issues and using the powerful tool of social media to raise awareness. It should be interesting to see how the league responds moving forward.
