And then there were eight.
The MLB postseason kicked off in intense, nail-biting fashion as it took the Oakland Athletics and Kansas City Royals 12 innings to declare a winner in Tuesday’s American League wild card game. It was the Royals, playing in their first postseason game in 29 years, who eventually came out on top 9-8 in the marathon game.
The Royals didn’t have much time to celebrate, though, and they’ll take on the top-seeded Los Angeles Angels in the American League Division Series, which gets underway Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. But before the first pitch is tossed at Angel Stadium at Anaheim, the Detroit Tigers will travel to Baltimore, where they’ll face the Orioles at 5:30 p.m. in the other AL matchup.
The National League wild card game, meanwhile, didn’t exactly have anyone on the edge of their seats. The San Francisco Giants ended the Pittsburgh Pirates’ season with an 8-0 victory behind Madison Bumgarner’s 10-strikeout, four-hit shutout performance. The National League Division Series won’t get underway until Friday, with the Giants facing the Washington National at 3 p.m., and the Los Angeles Dodgers hosting the St. Louis Cardinals at 6:30 p.m.
