The Green Bay Packers had a bad day at the office Sunday.
The Packers fell to the New Orleans Saints 44-23 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Saints’ offense finally looked in sync after being up and down for most of the season, but Green Bay’s decision-making really opened the door for New Orleans’ convincing win.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy was very aggressive early in the game. Former NFL linebacker Brady Poppinga, who played for McCarthy in Green Bay, found this to be out of character for the even-keeled coach. It ultimately proved costly.
While McCarthy might have been simply trying to catch New Orleans off guard, Poppinga can’t help but wonder whether Saints head coach Sean Payton had something to do with the Packers pushing the envelope. Poppinga wrote Thursday in a FootballByFootball.com column that it felt like McCarthy was trying to one-up Payton.
