BOSTON — Johnny Boychuk will take the ice Thursday night at TD Garden as an opposing player for the first time in his NHL career when his New York Islanders take on the Bruins.

It’s been almost three weeks since Boychuk was traded to the Islanders for draft picks, and he’s helped them start the campaign 4-2-0, good enough for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Bruins head coach Claude Julien knows his team has a tough test ahead of it.

“They’ve got good skill, they’ve got good speed and we respect that,” Julien said of the Islanders after Boston’s morning skate. “Their young players are really coming around and becoming pretty good players in this league that are well respected. We’re not necessarily talking about [John] Tavares because he’s been a pretty good player in this league for quite a while now but the youngest players they’ve been grooming for a
long time have really been coming along.”

“That team has earned a lot of respect around the league for its speed and its skill level.
We’re one of those teams that have noticed it or hasn’t gone unnoticed with us anyways.”

The Islanders won the season series 2-1 in 2013-14.
