BOSTON — Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli announced Tuesday that the team has sent 2014 first-round draft pick David Pastrnak to Providence of the AHL.
“We want a little more time to watch him and assess him,” Chiarelli said at his annual media day press conference at TD Garden. “I spoke to him this morning before practice, so he’ll go down and join Providence. … Both (Ryan) Spooner and (Bobby) Robins are in our group going into the season. We still have some decisions to make.”
Chiarelli also said Matt Fraser is on the NHL roster to start the season, which is no surprise given the way he played during the preseason and training camp. He showed a physical game, going to the dirty areas to win pucks, and scored a few goals.
It’s possible Pastrnak still could play some games at the NHL level over the next few weeks. If the 18-year-old right winger plays in more than nine games for Boston, he would have to start his entry-level contract in 2014-15.
