Casey AffleckIn 2013, two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon in one of the most traumatic and tragic events in the city’s history. Those events now will be depicted on the big screen, with a Massachusetts native playing the lead role.

Actor Casey Affleck will co-produce and star in an upcoming film about the 2013 Boston Marathon, according to an exclusive report from Variety magazine. The film reportedly will be based on Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge’s book “Boston Strong: A City’s Triumph Over Tragedy,” which is scheduled to be published in February and will chronicle the aftermath of the bombing, including the massive manhunt for bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Affleck and his brother Ben certainly aren’t new to starring in Boston-based movies. Both had roles in the 1997 classic “Good Will Hunting,” while Casey starred in the local mystery film “Gone Baby Gone,” which Ben directed.

Affleck’s specific role in the Boston Marathon film has yet to be announced — as has a release date — but the producers are set to shop the project to studios within the next week.
