James YoungWALTHAM, Mass. — James Young should have one final preseason game to showcase his skills for the Boston Celtics.

Young, the 17th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, has been sidelined since the preseason opener with a hamstring injury, but he’s nearing a return to action.

Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said the rookie guard would participate in Monday’s non-contact practice and Tuesday’s full-contact session, and, if all goes well, would return to the lineup Wednesday night when Boston hosts the Brooklyn Nets.

“He’ll play Wednesday if he’s able to go,” Stevens said. “Obviously, we’ll have to balance that appropriately, because the last thing you want to do is reinjure a lingering issue, but as long as he’s cleared and gets a couple of days under his belt. … He’ll be sore if he goes full, hard (Monday), even though we’re not going contact with how much we’re moving, and that’ll be good, because by Wednesday he’ll be in pretty good shape.”

Young played 20 minutes in the Celtics’ Oct. 6 preseason opener and scored 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting despite injuring his hamstring before the game. He has missed each of Boston’s last six contests.

Stevens also gave an update Monday on the status of Rajon Rondo, saying there is “a possibility” the point guard could return from his broken hand in time for the Celtics’ regular-season opener next Wednesday night.
