Defenseman Johnny Boychuk was traded from the Boston Bruins to the New York Islanders for a pair of second-round picks and a conditional third-rounder Saturday.

The Bruins’ front office was faced with a difficult decision, as their salary cap situation forced them into making the deal. It has been anticipated the past few weeks that a deal would take place and likely include either Boychuk or fellow defenseman Matt Bartkowski.

Bruins coach Claude Julien, of course, is one of many people who will miss Boychuk’s presence in Boston this season.

“He’s going to be missed,” Julien said. “He was great not just on the ice but also in the dressing room.”
